The
Boys From Rome
One
of the most heart-wrenching casualties of this fire was
the untimely death of thirty of Georgia's most promising
high school students who had decended upon Atlanta with
much excitement and anticipation to attend a Youth Assembly
meeting sponsored by the HI YI, a youth Christian arm of
the YMCA.
Like
many other towns, the city of Rome, Georgia had sent several
of their brightest students. Among these promising teens
were four beloved and much respected boys who had the misfortune
of being assigned to a room on the upper backside of the
Winecoff Hotel: one of the few rooms that firemen's ladders
could not reach.
The
death of these four boys proved to be a loss for which the
city of Rome would never recover. |
